Back Safety: Proper Lifting Techniques
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that one out of every five workplace injuries or illnesses are related to the back. In California back injuries reportedly comprised 26.3 percent of all workers’ comp payments between 2001 and 2011 the highest percentage of any injury type. The CWCI (California Workers Comp Institute) found that 44 percent of back-related claims resulted in lost work days, which contributed to higher costs for such injuries. The majority of the back injuries resulted from employees lifting things. While there are no Cal/OSHA regulations specific to back safety, they do require hazard assessments to identify potential hazards, which include hazards that can cause a back injury.
