Safety and the Supervisor: What They Should Know

Supervisors are key to the success of any organization. They can have either a tremendous positive or negative impact on their company. The effects of a good or bad supervisor will be felt throughout the company, not just within their particular area of responsibility. For example, good supervisors tend to have fewer problems as compared to other supervisors. Their shifts or crews tend to work better with less unexpected down time, lost time accident or incidents.

Basic Communication for Supervisors

Supervisors are key to the success of any operation but often they have not been properly trained on how to communicate or on how they communicate with their employees! This can lead to a host of problems not the least of which can be morale problems which can in turn have a tremendous negative impact on workplace safety, employee litigation rates, production, quality and your ability to be competitive and meet your obligations on time.

Discipline and the Supervisor

Discipline. It is one of the most misunderstood and often misused tools a Supervisor has! Some never use it while others overuse it! Both not using and over using it can negatively impact your employees’ morale, safety and productivity! It can also increase your company’s exposure to fines, citations and lawsuits! It can have a tremendous negative impact your bottom line! So why is this? And, what can we do about this?

Preventing a Workers’ Comp Claim from Litigating

There is a lot of concern about litigated workers’ comp claims, and for good reason. We know that there are companies in every industry whose employees litigate just about every claim, or so it would seem. Yet, surprisingly, there are companies in every industry that may have one litigated claim, if any, over the course of several years. The question is why? Is there anything we can learn to help us reduce our litigation rate?

Unfortunately, in today’s world, a scenario involving an Active Shooter in the workplace has become more common than we ever thought possible. Today as a supervisor, manager, Safety or HR Professional, you need to have at least a working knowledge of what can lead to an Active Shooter situation and more importantly, what you and your company can do to prevent a situation from developing. Likewise, you will need to know and train your staff on what to do and not do if you find yourself in a situation involving an active shooter at work!

Preventing Workers’ Comp Fraud

Worker’s comp fraud, just the mention of it is enough to raise blood pressures and tempers. Most employers attempts at combating WC fraud focus solely on what to do once they suspect that a claim is fraudulent. For example, we learn about the red flags that are indicators of possible fraud. We educate ourselves on how to carefully investigate and properly document the file in preparation for turning it over to the SIU of our carrier or maybe even turning the file over to the local DA to see if they will prosecute it!

California law AB1825 requires that all new supervisors of employers with 50 or more employees attend training in sexual harassment prevention within 6 months of hire or promotion, and all current supervisors attend training every two years. AB 2053 now requires that we incorporate “Abusive Conduct” or bullying as part of the mandatory topics. SB 1087 requires that Farm Labor Contractors must conduct annual sexual harassment prevention training for their supervisors at least once per year for a minimum of two hours per calendar year. Failure to do so can result in the revocation, suspension or non-renewal of the Farm Labor Contractor License.
